Paphos mosaics are considered among the finest in the Eastern Mediterranean. They mainly depict mosaics scenes from Greek mythology and are dating from the 2nd to the 5th century AD. It’s a “must” visit for every visitor to Paphos.

House of Dionysus
The House of Dionysus is located in the Theater Quarter. The house of Dionysus was a roman private residence dating back to the 2nd century AD. The characteristics of this roman private residence are the mosaic decorations and the mythological compositions mainly depicting scenes from Greek mythology. Its name House of Dionysus is due to the many representations of Dionysus, the god of wine. It was a private residence with over 40 rooms, covered with a splendid mosaic floor. A stone stairway leads to the elegant private rooms of the upper story. Believed to have belonged to a member of the Roman class or a wealthy Paphos citizen.

The House of Theseus
The House of Theseus mosaics can be found close to the House of Dionysus, date back to the 2nd century AD. Theseus was a legendary king of Athens. Interesting geometrical decorations and mythological representations make it a worthy place to visit. The mosaics of the House of Orpheus date back to the 3rd century AD and are located to the west of the House of Theseus. There are three mythological representations worth seeing, the “Hercules and the Lion of Nemea”, the “Amazon” and the “Orpheus and his lyre”, where the mythical poet is featured playing his lyre surrounded by birds and animals.

The House of Aion

The House of Aion contains mosaics of five scenes such as a depiction of Leda and Zeus in a form of a swan, Dionysos as a baby accompanied by various nymphs, a beauty contest between Cassiopia and the Nereids, of which Aion is the judge and the final scene shows Apollo and Marsyas punishing a foolish man who had challenged the God to a musical duel and lost.

The House of Orpheus

Contrary to popular belief, Lorem Ipsum is not simply random text. It has roots in a piece of classical Latin literature from 45 BC, making it over 2000 years old. Richard McClintock, a Latin professor at Hampden-Sydney College in Virginia, looked up one of the more obscure Latin words, consectetur, from a Lorem Ipsum passage, and going through the cites of the word in classical literature, discovered the undoubtable source. Lorem Ipsum comes from sections 1.10.32 and 1.10.33 of "de Finibus Bonorum et Malorum" (The Extremes of Good and Evil) by Cicero, written in 45 BC. This book is a treatise on the theory of ethics, very popular during the Renaissance. The first line of Lorem Ipsum, "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet..", comes from a line in section 1.10.32. The standard chunk of Lorem Ipsum used since the 1500s is reproduced below for those interested. Sections 1.10.32 and 1.10.33 from "de Finibus Bonorum et Malorum" by Cicero are also reproduced in their exact original form, accompanied by English versions from the 1914 translation by H. Rackham.
